Mark 8:27~38. “Get Behind Me.” Mark 8 reveals to us something we already know but don’t like to admit: it is difficult to be a follower. In this passage, Jesus makes it very clear that it isn’t an easy road ahead. Jesus’ message is simple but not easy, “Get behind me. Fall in line. Follow me.” This is both an obvious posture we know that we must have as followers of Christ, and it is often one of the most challenging for us. It is both the first step in discipleship and it is often the hardest step to take.
Luke 9:57~62. “Undivided Discipleship.” In our passage in Luke, we find what we might call a trilogy of discipleship dropouts. We all have our own excuses for not following through on our good intentions, not living up to the challenge of discipleship. The three would-be followers Jesus encounters in this week’s text in Luke are great at manufacturing excuses that allow them to gracefully bow out of discipleship when it got too demanding or uncomfortable. What excuses do we come up with?

Ephesians 4:17-28, 2 Corinthians 8:1-9 ~ “Godly Generosity” (Commandment #8). You shall not steal. It sounds easy enough. Sure you don’t break into people’s homes, their parked cars, you don’t shoplift. But with each of these commandments, things are a bit deeper. This week, we examine the proper place for the “stuff” in our lives and how it ought to serve God and neighbor.

Matthew 5:27~30 ~ “Protecting Covenant” (Commandment #7). Jesus says that it’s not just a sin to wake up in somebody else’s bed. He says it’s a sin to want to wake up there. While that might be convicting enough, there is also a flip side to the coin of this commandment. The positive force of the commandment is to do everything you can to preserve, encourage your marriage and everyone else’s marriage.

Matthew 5:21-26, I John 3:11-15 ~ “Getting Away with Murder” (Commandment #6). Most of us don’t have a problem with not murdering someone. As we listen to what Jesus has to say about this commandment, we quickly realize that the implications hit very close to home. This commandment means we say no to death, no to killing. It means we must say YES to life. This commandment encourages us to be ‘pro-life’ in our day to day affairs.

Matthew 5:33~37/Exodus 20:7 ~ “Carrying the Glory” (Commandment #3). The prohibition in this commandment is not to “misuse the name of the Lord Your God.” The Hebrew word for misuse here can also be translated “carry.” It’s about us carrying the glorious name of God in the world. For the Hebrews, God has redeemed these former slaves and is now inviting them to be representatives in the world of this redemption and the God who made it happen. God’s reputation is going to depend on how they ‘carry’ God’s name. This week, we consider what it means for us to represent the name of God.
